Since 1976, friends and neighbors on the upper Gunflint Trail have been organizing the Gunflint Trail Canoe Races to raise money for worthy causes benefiting all on the Trail. Since then only one year was cancelled – 1999 – when the great BWCA Blowdown occurred just a few days before the scheduled Races. The Gunflint Trail Canoe Races is a family-oriented fundraiser that benefits the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
According to GTVFD Chief Jim Morrison: “Funds from the Canoe Races support GTVFD Emergency Medical Services. We have new ambulance that offers much safer operations and a gentler ride to town for responders and patients. We have added glucagon, an IM injection for folks having a diabetic crisis and are unconscious. With the increasing problems with opioid overdose we now carry Narcan. Thanks to all the donations we receive from the community we are able to provide these services and continue to upgrade them.”
